Secondary Students

Need information for homework? Want to find out about sustainable development, food additives, industrial chemistry, catalysts, risk and other science topics?

We have some free access web sites to help you!

Post-16 (AS and A2) students see also the notes below.

CIEC Web Resources

Sustainability-ed

Sustain-ed

Two sites looking at the environment, and what industry is doing to make their work more sustainable

Understanding food additives

Lots of information about E-numbers and other things that get put in food. Includes some of the more controversial issues.

Greener Industry

Discover how the chemical industry is changing to become 'greener'. Includes lots of details about how chemicals are made.

Risk-ed

All about understanding hazards and risks. Are you a tiger or a mouse? Take the test and find out!

Industry Animated

A collection of animations showing how things like cooling towers, filter presses and other things found in industry work.

Catalysis-ed

An in-depth look at the many ways catalysts are used, from catalytic convertors to chocolate. Most use for Key Stage 4 and above.
Note: new web address! www.catalysis-ed.org.uk

Molecules Matters

This one is about the place of chemistry in our society. These pages provide resources for teachers, but also links to some topical issues.

Post-16 Students

Some of our sites were designed to support the study of science beyond GCSE:

Catalysis-ed includes detailed information about the chemistry of catalysts and how they are used commercially.

Greener Industry examines how chemical manufacturing processes are changing to reduce their impact on the environment. The site includes details of industrial reactions for the making of chlorine, sulphuric acid, and other bulk chemicals, as well as how renewable resources are making an impact in the chemicals sector.

You'll find useful information on Understanding Food Additives (E-numbers and food issues), Sustainability-ed (sustainable development) and Molecules Matters (issues surrounding the use of chemicals).

The CIEC also publishes two excellent books on industrial chemistry, The Essential Chemical Industry and The Essential Plastics Industry. Look out for these in your school or college.
